Filmfare Awards Nominations List

Aamir1 Paa_First_Look_1

Filmfare awards were at one time in the history of Bollywood, the only awards organized to recognize talent in Bollywood. But over the years, Filmfare Awards has become synonymous with selling and buying of awards. This is one of the reason why Aamir Khan never attends any Bollywood Awards. Well, we would never know the real truth but then haven’t the awards lost their sheen what with so many awards happening back to back with each one having their own favorites and different ‘Bests’. As for the audience well, we must just sit back and enjoy the naach gaana on TV because that’s what these awards have become- a TRP game and a single episode income for the channels hosting such awards.

Mildred Pierce

Friday, 14 January, 2011 Mildrid Pierce (1945) dir. Michael Curtiz
Starring: Joan Crawford, Ann Blyth, Jack Carlson, Zachary Scott, Eve Arden

****

By Alan Bacchus

This is a depressing story of monumental proportions but not less involving and exciting, an ambitious and epic story really of a woman fighting to find dignity and independence and to protect her family from the ravages of life, yet is undone and thwarted by that very thing she’s tried so hard to protect.

The opening is wonderfully noirish, hardboiled as it comes. The first shot features Pierce’s husband being shot and killed in violent hail of bullets. Then a taut chase sequence around the house wherein Mildred Pierce is aprehended by the police for murder. During the nightlong interrogation, the film flashes back to chart the course of events which would lead to this fateful night.

Back in the past we see Pierce first as a devoted wife, doing her expected duty, always in the kitchen and being a mother to her kids. Her husband, Bert, though is a lazy layabout, jobless and who takes advantage of Mildred’s fierceness. She can’t take it anymore though and they split up, with her taking custody of their two children Veda and Kay. Pierce enters survival mode and uses her determination and persevance to work her way up from a lowly dishwasher and waitress eventually to owning a chain of restaurants. Three men continually revolve around her life, her ex-husband, her real estate manager and her new playboy beau. While her career is on track, dutifully working to provide for her kids, Veda over time develops a taste for money and class. Unfortunately Veda continually puts down her mother for stooping to working in the classless restaurant business as opposed to gold digging for a rich husband – a conflict which dissolves Pierce’s lifetime of hardwork and resulting in tragic consequences.

Though it can feel slightly hackneyed, looking back on the history of Hollywood, Mildred Pierce is a socio-cultural time capsule, and a forerunner to the popular and influential ‘women’s pictures of the 50’s, and perhaps even feminism of the 60’s and 70’s. Remember it was 1945, the second World War just finished, families had barely started to move out to the suburbs and women had barely begun to seek out their independence. And so Mildred Pierce should be as a heroic figure, which makes her fate at the end of the picture so devastating.

Historical context aside it’s also a crackerjack piece of cinema, typically crisp and punchy direction from Michael Curtiz, my favourite of all the old studio directors. Curtiz was a master of pacing. Watch the restaurant scene which establishes the fast-paced hustle of Pierce’s stint as a waitress and thus the urgency of her goals. Curtiz was also a master of montage scenes which compresses time so perfectly. Curtiz opens his scenes with close-ups, often pulling his camera back to reveal the establishing shot - a dynamic and modern technique which feels thoroughly modern.

And then there’s his camera movement. Few directors ever used a dolly or crane better than Curtiz. In a biography of Curtiz, Bette Davis, a frequent actress of his, once complained that Curtiz would watch his dolly during the shots more than the actors. But Curtiz never had an unmotivated camera move, and everything in Mildred Pierce is motivated by the actors, and by Joan Crawford in particular. Her performance is so commanding and powerful she deserved won her only Oscar as Best Actress.

Shahrukh Khan Hosts Party For Akon

Shahrukh Khan hosted a party for the International POP icon AKON in Mumbai at the JW Marriot Hotel. Apparently Akon was here to sing a song in SRK’s forthcoming movie, RA1, to be directed by Anubhav Sinha and written by Mushtaq Sheikh. Well, if it’s Shahrukhan’s party, you can be sure that the whole Bollywood as well its neighbors attended the party.

Shahrukh Khan was asked whether he would be showing Akon his latest movie, My Name Is Khan to which he said that Akon was too busy and had his schedule full and also that if he watched his own film again, he would get bored. Hmm…don’t worry SRK, you’re in good company, a lot of people got bored by My Name Is Khan too and that too while watching it the first time. So we can understand. Well, no pun here, only fun.

Check out the people who were spotted at the Akon party at JW Marriot in Mumbai. Enjoy!

Aishwarya Rai Biography-Things People Missed Out

I still remember when my elder brother told me about this beautiful girl in his college. He said, 'Guys were reaching early to college just so that they can catch a glimpse of her'. 'Bah!', I used to scoff, 'What a myth'. But secretly, one day, my friends and me reached the DG Ruparel College in Matunga (West), waiting for the 'myth' to unfold. The teenage hormones were running overtime at the mention of girls that time, you see. Then the moment arrived...we saw her...and we kept seeing her even when she was long past gone into her classroom. This hot, gorgeous and the most beautiful woman to walk on the planet earth was none other than Aishwarya Rai...
(Va Va Voooooom)
That moment and the moment many years later when I saw her in the Pepsi ad are etched and embossed in the memory forever. These are somethings which you will never find in any biography of Aishwarya Rai.
The first time I saw the Pepsi advertisement on TV, Aamir was playing naughty with Mahima Choudhary (then Rita Choudhary), when this beautiful babe walks in and says, 'Hi, I'm Sanju...' The same Ruparel college girl, oh my God!
She had arrived. Truly.
That moment was probably the last moment when my young teenage hormones went berserk. After that I
grew up, of course. Remembering that moment still gives me the heebie-jeebies. I remember we used to keep track of when that particular ad was aired and during which shows, so that we can catch it by pretending to be watching the show. (Sigh)
Name : Aishwarya Krishnaraj RaiNickname(s) : Ash, Gullu, Ice Maiden, Plastic Beauty, Queen Of Bollywood, EtcDate of Birth : 1 November 1973Age : 35 yearsBirth Place : Mangalore, Karnataka, IndiaHeight : 5' 7" Eye Color: Bluish Green (Sigh!) Skin: Fair, Blemish-less, Perfect (Sigh!)Education : Arya Vidya Mandir at Santacruz, Mumbai--Jai Hind College, Churchgate, Mumbai--D.G. Ruparel College, Matunga, Mumbai (Yaaaah!)Father : Krishnaraj RaiMother : Vrinda RaiBrother : Aditya RaiHusband : Abhishek Bachchan Married on : April 20, 2007Debut Film : Iruvar (Tamil) in 1997Claim To Fame : Her roles in films 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' (1999), Taal (1999), Devdas (2002), Guru (2008), Dhoom (2006)

Aishwarya Rai was always a star right from her school days when she did her first ad for Camlin pencils. She was nine years old then. Just imagine, today, she is the most sought after desi actress in Hollywood. One cannot imagine the number of offers she has refused and these offers were from Big names of Hollywood, no less.

Director Brett Ratner wanted to cast Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Rush Hour 3.
Will Smith has openly mentioned that he wants to do a film with Aishwarya Rai but she has been refusing him right from the time he made 'Hitch' to the current film he is making.
She has refused films like Mr & Mrs Smith, can you believe that? And then went on to act in some no-brainers like Pink Panther and Pink Panther2 where she had a blink-and-you-miss role.
But that's Aishwarya for you!
Anyway, there's a lot of trivia and professional details of the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, to be listed in one post. So please click on the links below to know more about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. (Incidentally, the Bachchan surname is regularly misspelled as 'Bachan', but get this once and for all, it's B.A.C.H.C.H.A.N.)
That reminds me about Aishwarya Rai's wedding to Bollywood star actor Abhishek Bachchan.
Her marriage to Abhishek Bachchan was a moment when many a heart was broken.
There were guys who wanted to commit suicide after that. Whew! Thankfully, I had grown out of that kind of fascination for Aishwarya Rai (Psst...I'm married now)

The wedding of the most beautiful woman on earth to the dashing Bachchan son, Bollywood actor, Abhishek Bachchan was a talking point for many days even though it was supposed to be a low profile wedding. Imagine what would've happened if it was celebrated in full glory?
But even then the wedding was hardly low profile considering the amount of money that was spent and also

the amount of publicity it received for so many days, even though the wedding lasted for only three days. (Only?)
Some Aishwarya Rai Wedding Trivia- About 15 kilos of henna was specially ordered from Sojat in Rajasthan for the henna ceremony before her wedding. The Bachchan wedding invitations were embossed with two entwined 'A's and delivered along with a box of some exotic expensive chocolate. Within the invitation was also a poem about new beginnings written by Amitabh Bachchan's father and renowned poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan. (Isn't it strange how Amitabh Bachchan's father has a 'Rai' in his name?)Many Bollywood actors, directors and other people close to the Bachchan family were not invited for the Aishwarya Rai- Abhishek Bachchan wedding which ruffled a few feathers for a while.
Well, here are some photos of the wedding between Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan. Aishwarya Rai Wedding Photos.

Tees Maar Khan Hindi Movie Review

Film: Tees Maar Khan (U/A)
Director: Farah Khan
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Akshaye Khanna, and others
Rating: *½

Tees Maar Khan

These are some of the reviews for the latest Bollywood Hindi film, Tees Maar Khan, directed by Farah Khan starring Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif and Akshaye Khanna, collected from the internet from different sources.

Times of India
Tees Maar Khan too is purported to be total fun and begins on a promising note, with the actors creating havoc on screen from the word go. Unborn Akshay kicking in his Bollywood-crazy mother's womb, all grown-up Akshay breaking the law and bragging about it in bindaas style, dim-witted Anya (Katrina) doing the Sheela Ki Jawani number with aplomb and basking in her B-grade starlet status, an edgy superstar (Akshaye Khanna) tearing his hair apart for having missed the Oscar to Anil Kapoor's Slumdog Millionaire act...you begin to settle down for loads of masti and dhamaal as the show unfolds. But post interval, you end up restless. And fidgety. Because nothing really connects.

DNA
Farah Khan’s idea of a ‘holiday’ film — put together a world-infamous con artist, a Bollywood starlet, an Oscar aspirant, a bunch of naïve villagers, and befuddled policemen, then weave an absurd story connecting all of them. That is how you have this catastrophe called Tees Maar Khan.

www.bollywoodtrends.com
There is a difference between Entertainment and Mental Torture. Tawaif Ki Loothi Izzat Bachana Aur Tees Maar Khan dekhna, dono hi bekaar hain.Okay, here is why Tees Maar Khan can make you cry this December. Minus point of Tees Maar khan: Apart from a couple of things, in Tees Maar Khan, there is nothing worth applauding The movie is made very casually, (this is the vibe one gets, considering comedy is a ‘serious’ business);

katrina-kaif-tees-maar-khan

www.glamsham.com
TEES MAAR KHAN ends with a song called 'Happy Ending' in which many cast and crew members receive Oscars. Well, it isn't such a happy ending for you as a viewer. The con job goes wrong mid way, after an impressive start. Rating: 2.5/5

So all in all it is quite an unanimous verdict that Tees Maar Khan is a bad movie. Although, it got a good initial opening at the box-office, it can be safely said that Tees Maar Khan will not even recover its cost. Guess, Farah Khan should have stuck to her favourite Bollywood star, Shahrukh Khan and not switched loyalties. ‘Sheela Ki Jawani’ alone cannot save a film, madam.

Did I hear right? Farah Khan is already planning a sequel to the dud, Tees Maar Khan. What’s happening with Bollywood directors, anyway? Farhan Akhtar is making a sequel to the super flop Don and Farah Khan making a sequel for Tees Maar Khan… I think Bollywood directors and producers need to get their brains examined, because they have been leaving them at home while making movies for quite sometime now. But the audience has wizened now as they are keeping their brains with them while watching the movies even though most of the film makers urge them to leave them at home. WTF.

Cham cham naache pariyo ki dhunein

(Dekho aayi holi rang layi holi
chali picthkari uda hain gulaal
banke hain ghata mann jhum utha
rang chalke hain neele hare laal) - 2

Rang reli mein rang khelungi
Rang jaaungi
Rang gehre hain
Abke saal
Ab hamein koi rokey nahi
Ab hamein koi tokey nahi
Ab hone do ho jo bhi haal
Dekho aayi holi rang layi holi
Chali picthkari uda hai gulaal
Banke hain ghata mann jhum utha
Rang chalke hain neele hare laal

Bheegi choli chunari bhi geeli hui
Sajnaji dekho main neeli hui
Thodi thodi tu jo nashili hui
Patli kamar lachkili hui
Mann kyon na behke
Tan kyon na dehke
Tum reh reh ke
Mat pheko yeh nazaron ka jaal
Ab hamein koi rokey nahi
Ab hamein koi tokey nahi
Ab hone do ho jo bhi haal
Dekho aayi holi rang layi holi
Aaj hua ek sa kamaal
Rang aaise ude dekhane mein lage
Koi range hawao ke baal
(Chandi ki thaal se leke gulaal
ab radha se khelenge holi murari
radha bhi natkhat hain
palti woh jhatpat hain
maari kanhaiyaa ko hain pichkaari) - 2
Dekhane wale toh dang hue hain
Ke holi mein dono ho sang hue hai
Toh radha kanha ek rang hue hain
Kaun hain radha kaun hain kanha
Kaun yeh samjha kaun yeh jaana

Holi mein jo sajni se nayan lade
Thaami hain kalaai ke baat badhe
Teer se jaise mere mann mein gade
Teri yeh nazariya jo mujhpe pade
Jo yeh raas rache

Koi kaise bache
Hamse poocho na
Tum yeh sawaal
Ab hamein koi rokey nahi
Ab hamein koi tokey nahi
Ab hone do ho jo bhi haal
(Chorus 1)
Ab hamein koi rokey nahi

Casino Jack and the United States of Money

Monday, 17 January, 2011 Casino Jack and the United States of Money (2009) dir. Alex Gibney
Documentary

By Alan Bacchus

***

I’m only a casual follower of American politics, and know very little of the complex system of the lobbying wherein third party organizations hire non-governmental third party firms to pressure members of Congress into voting and passing Bills and thus affecting the policies of the nation. Casino Jack attempts to make sense of this system so reliant on money and thus susceptible to corruption by telling the story Jack Abramoff, the king of the lobbyists, who was famously indicted and served time for fraud.

It’s no surprise this is a Republican story, when it comes to political controversy, for Democrats, it always seems to be sex scandals, for Republicans it’s always about money. As the most aggressively free market country in the world, success in business seems to go to those who can push the moral and ethical edge to the max in order to squeeze as much money out of the system.

Jack Abramoff squeezed a lot. It’s a head spinning first hour of information thrown at us. Like All the President’s Men or even that lengthy speech by Donald Sutherland in the middle of Oliver Stone’s JFK, Alex Gibney bombards us with names of lobbyists, politicians, dollar figures and organization names which Abramoff used to move money from place to place in exchange for political favours.

The title refers to Abramoff’s association with Native American Casinos which Abramoff exploited in order to cheat and swindle millions of dollars out of the entitlement of these native reserves. Abramoff seemd to scour the world for loopholes to exploit, including supporting sweatshop manufacturing operations in the unregulated US commonwealth nation of Sai Pan.

Casino Jack produces the same effect as watching Charles Ferguson’s Inside Job, or even Gibney’s Enron The Smartest Guys in the Room, all of which simplifies the complexities of white collar crimes. Casino Jack arrives on DVD in time with the release of the dramatic version of this story, starring Kevin Spacey and directed by former documentarian George Hickenlooper (who sadly died last year). There’s enough special features to add even more context and information, as if we didn’t get enough in the actual film. Unfortunately we’re also given a rather large pitch for ‘Take Part’ an advocate group against these heinous lobbying practices. It’s an important cause, but ironically we feel as if we’re being lobbied to ourselves by watching this DVD.

Filmfare Awards 2010- List Of Winners

The 55th Filmfare Awards 2010 held on the 27th of February 2010 at the YRF Studios. Here is a list of the winners tonight. If you want to know who all were nominated for the particular categories then please click here to view list of nominations for the 55th Filmfare Awards. Sadly, the first family of Bollywood, the Bachchan parivaar was missing from this year’s award functions because of some altercation between the Timed Group and the Bachchan family. Incidentally, Mumbai Mirror carried a false report about the Bachchan bahu, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, stating some inside info about why Aishwarya Rai cannot have children. This irked the Bachchans as they asked for an apology but none came forward, hence the boycott. Aamir Khan as usual, gave this function a miss.

Shahrukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan were back in their elements at this 55th Edition of the Filmfare Awards as hosts for the evening. Check out the list of the winners of this years Filmfare awards.

Misery

Sunday, 16 January, 2011 Misery (1990) dir. Rob Reiner
Starring: Kathy Bates, James Caan, Richard Farnsworth, Lauren Bacall

***

Its obvious 'Misery' is not the work of a genre director or even anyone with any experience with horror. Rob Reiner’s work on Stephen King’s intense novel is workmanlike, unflashy, but anchored by William Goldman’s tightly plotted script and two fine lead performances. After 19 years 'Misery' remains a highly watchable light horror film for people who don’t like horror films.

It’s a classic Stephen King set-up, a high concept picture which began from King’s own neuroses as an author dealing with the confining feeling of his audience’s expectations. King writes himself into the character of Paul Sheldon (James Caan), a romance novelist excited because he’s just completed his first non-romance novel, a cathartic feeling of freedom as an artist. But when his car runs off a snowy road in the mountains with his manuscript, he becomes face to face with the greatest challenge of his life.

He wakes up from consciousness in the spare bed of Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), Sheldon’s #1 fan, a Susan Boyle-like spinster and shut in who lives vicariously through Sheldon’s romance heroine, Misery. In just seven minutes King, Reiner and Goldman establish the rules of Sheldon’s shut-in world. With his legs broken, in the middle of nowhere in a snowstorm, it’s the same narrative shackles King loves to revel in. Whether it’s the car in 'Cujo', or the Overlook Hotel in 'The Shining', its a Stephen King world with characters isolated in spaces and a psychological and physically duel to the death.

Goldman uses King’s novel as a jumping off point effectively detailing the common sense predicament for both Annie and Paul. He finds the right amount of details to weave into the struggle and paying them effectively throughout the film. The opening shot of the wine glass, cigarette and match is no coincidence, a clever detail which serves two narrative purposes 1) the symbol of Sheldon’s accomplishment as an author and 2) the instrument which Paul uses to defeat Annie.

It was Barry Sonnenfeld’s last picture as a cinematographer, and he employs a very ungenre-like bright and flat lighting scheme for a horror flick. Under someone else’s watch Annie’s home would be a nourish, Norman Bates-like layer lit with deep shadows and gritty textured surfaces. Most of the film is played in daytime, in a warm, quaint and protective home, counter-playing the madness residing inside.

Reiner’s inexperience with the genre is visible. His execution of the suspenseful moments are adequate, because of Goldman’s well-timed plotting and Caan and Bates’s perforamnce. And so it takes only the bare minimum to pay off the half a dozen key set pieces. Though we can’t help but think how a John Carpenter, or Roman Polanski or even an M. Night Shyamalan would have done with say, the hobbling scene, or the dinner table scene when Paul tries to poison Annie. With Reiner’s visual style, the suspense feels like an artificial injection of fear, a cinematic suspense, manufactured from editing and the nature of the concept as opposed to a pure visceral horror.

“Misery” remains a fun movie to this day in part because of Reiner's funny bone and his desire not to take the film too seriously. The wink of self-acknowledge allows mainstream audiences to enjoy being scared - a disposable kind of horror film which leaves you immediately and doesn’t give you nightmares.

“Misery” is available on Blu-Ray from MGM Home Entertainment

The Godfather- DVD Review

Based on Mario Puzo’s best seller novel, The Godfather, directed by Francis Ford Coppola is probably the only film which finds its place in most top ten movie lists.

Winner of three Academy Awards including Best Picture, The Godfather was nominated for an additional eight Oscars. With intriguing depth, it provides audiences with a glimpse into the notorious underworld of warring New York crime families.

Marlon Brando as the Godfather turns in, arguably, the most memorable performance of his career. Also this Hollywood classic boasts of a number of actors who became Hollywood legends with this film.

Considered as one of the most perfect movies ever made, The Godfather is like a Worldwide benchmark for many a film maker, actor and writer.

Godfather is the greatest mafia film ever produced, and perhaps the best drama in all of cinema history. A dramatic story of family and change, of youthful idealism and the pragmatism of adulthood, The Godfather is a must-see for any serious cinema aficionado…although one cannot really concentrate on the film making part of the movie because the story is so compelling that one can’t help but get involved in the story and forget about the technicalities of the making.

EVERYONE ELSE Now Streaming On Netflix Instant

EVERYONE ELSE (Dir. Maren Ade, 2009)

Lars Eidinger and Birgit Minichmayr as a couple of young newlyweds on a Mediterranean vacation are one of the most believable screen couples to come along in some time.

Believable because they are neurotic, suspicious and thoroughly mixed up yet still seem to have convincing affection for each other. However as our time with them ends and the credits roll it appears to be undeniably a doomed affection.

This is a largely formless film that basically just follows the copule as they flow through a few days - eating, drinking, making love, and endlessly making vague banter that hints to a poorly hidden sadness.

They run into another couple (Nicole Marischka and Hans-Jochen Wagner) and reluctantly try to socialize with them, but it only brings about insecurities about Eidinger's middling architectural career and their undefined class status.

"It's not embarrassing not to have profound dreams" Minichmayr offers at one point, and while she means it to comfort, it can't help but sting.

When the film explores the awkward yet affable dynamic of the 2 couples its easy to think a BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE thing might ensue, but don't worry - it's so not that kind of movie.

Though it drags slightly, the beautifully shot "Everyone Else" feels achingly real from the tense exchanges of the leads to the sex scenes which add to the voyeuristic appeal in that they look too real to be faked.

Those who fret about subtitles and small scale character studies will likely be bored, but EVERYONE ELSE will do for those looking for an emotionally engaging film about people you might actually know, or in some cases might be.

Katrina Kaif Biography & Filmography

 KATRINA KAIF BIOGRAPHY:

Birthday: 16th July 1984 (Age-25 Yrs)

Katrina Kaif was born in HongKong. Imagine! Who could have thought of that? From being known as Salman Khan’s girlfriend to becoming the most hot and sought after actress in Bollywood, Katrina Kaif has surely come a long way. So much so that her relationship with Salman Khan is also reportedly on rocky ground. Hmm…guess success brings with it some power after all. Well, let’s see what Katrina Kaif is all about.

Katrina Kaif's (Vi) Desi Past: (Short Biography)

Born in Hongkong, lived her early life in Hawaii and later in England…and now earning her living in Mumbai, India. Since 2007 she has starred in several commercially successful films, making her one of the most popular actresses in Bollywood Katrina Kaif was born to a Kashmiri father and British mother. Though her father became a British citizen, she was raised in and then much later moved in with her mother in England. This was a good move because just in a couple of years, when Katrina Kaif was just 14 years old, she was offered a plum modeling assignment which changed her course of life. The hot, desi actress’ modelling work was noticed by Kaizad Gustad and he gave her a break in a forgettable film called Boom. Well, Boom bombed but Katrina managed to romp her foot right into the doors of Bollywood Tinseltown. She was flooded with modeling assignments once she shifted to Mumbai but the Bollywood directors were still averse of signing her for their masala films because she could not speak Hindi to save her life. But then came, Namaste London, A film by Vipul Shah, starring Akshay Kumar. This film was a massive hit which signalled the arrival of Hot Kat into the big bad world of Desi Bollywood Movies. The rest as they say is ‘not so much’ history but some chemistry, for sure. Hmm…surely you get the drift.

Katrina Kaif's Desi Present:

After giving many hits with Akshay Kumar like Singgh is Kingg & Welcome… and sometimes without him like Partner and Race, Katrina Kaif has truly arrived in Bollywood. Moreover, the icing on the cake was put when our sexy hot doll was recently given the title of a 'real' doll. Yes, she is the brand ambassador for Mattel's Desi Bollywood Barbie, which is all set to launch in September 2009.

Katrina Kaif's Hot Future:

Her future looks bright because of the kind of films she is going to be seen in, in the remaining part of this year. Blue~ Once again with Akshay Kumar (Chemistry is leading to a lot of Economics for this pair... or is it Biology?) Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani ~ With Ranbir Kapoor Directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi De Dana Dan~ (Shooting is on) (Update: Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani is one of the biggest hits of 2009)

A remake of the old hit, Padosan~ to be released early next year Guess, Katrina Kaif’s wallpapers are not coming down of the walls of young boys’ rooms yet. Way to go, Kat! Keep Racing along.

Katrina Kaif's Bollywood Filmography:

Ram Gopal Verma/ Abhishek BachchanRajkumar Santoshi/ Ranbir Kapoor

Katrina Kaif at the Awards:

2006: Stardust Breakthrough Performance Award (Female), Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya 2008: British-Indian Actor award, Zee Cine Awards 2008: IIFA Awards: Best Female Style Icon 2008: Most searched Indian celebrity on Google 2008: Sabsey Favourite Kaun Awards, Best actress award for Singh Is Kinng

Katrina Kaif: Gossip & Scandal:

This is everyone’s best part of a biography- controversies surrounding our Bollywood actors and actresses. Katrina has not been spared by the gossip mongers either but then there is no smoke without fire, right Kat? Sources close to the Salman Khan household, swear that Katrina was dating Salman Khan only because she wanted to make it big in Bollywood. Now that she has achieved what she had sought out to, she is not going to wink an eyelid before removing Salman bhai from her life like one would a fly in a soup. Well, nothing new for Salman Khan though. He sure knows how to take all this. Remember Ash, Bijli, Somy, Etc…Etc… and now Kat… Hmmm… There are a lot more stories on Katrina Kaif, stories and photos and…well, something to excite your eye‘balls’ with.

The Color Purple

Tuesday, 18 January, 2011 The Color Purple (1985) dir. Steven Spielberg
Starring: Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover,

**1/2

By Alan Bacchus

You take the good with bad with Steven Spielberg, especially with The Color Purple, his first ‘serious’ movies, a movie outside of sci-fi/thriller/adventure genre he’d made his name in. Though Spielberg treads for the first time in such important subject matter like race, poverty, abuse in the deep south, his trademark magic realist sentimentality inadvertantly conflicts in almost every scene and the tragic events which befall Alice Walker’s main character Celie.

It’s a large scale, epic story told over a period of 30 years or so from the point of view of a woman scorned with almost every conceivable act of maltreatment one could inflict on another human being. The opening shows Celie giving birth to a child conceived with her father, then taken away from her arms, presumably to be given away or even thrown into the wintery wild to die. The core relationship for Celie is with her devoted sister, Nettie, the only person who ever loved her. And so when Celie is married off to a dispicable farm owner Albert (Danny Glover), she goes from frying pan to the fire. Albert’s dominance is even more aggressive than her father's, eventually kicking Nettie out Celie's life never to receive contact with her ever again.

The rest of Celie’s life is one long physical and psychological beatdown by her tyrannical husband. It’s not until Albert’s love-struck former companion, sophisticated lounge singer Shug Avery (Margaret Avery), comes to town does Celie find a confidente. Gradually over the course of 20 years Celie’s grows into her own skin and embraces her own womanhood, and some degree a lesbian sexual orientation she doesn’t fully understand, nor reconcile.

As I rewatched The Color Purple in high definition Blu-Ray, it was same the odd contradictory experience as always. As usual there’s a superlative inventiveness in mise-en-scene in almost every scene. Spielberg’s ability to choreograph the actors and the camera with dance-like precision in order to highlight every emotional beat to the audience is astounding. There’s a palpable classical approach reminiscent of his main influences John Ford, Michael Curtiz and even Alfred Hitchcock. Watch the scene when Celie and Nettie are handclapping in their room early on, a scene which plays out without ever seeing Celie, instead visible only as shadows on the wall. Or the emotionally-charged finale where Celie meets up with Nettie for the first time. It’s a John Ford moment ripped right out of The Searchers and a dozen other of his classics.

And yet, the concerted effort to be visually clever hogties the scenes. Spielberg’s formality skews the emotions toward artificial melodrama. Spielberg's enthusiasm runs wild and unabated, overdramatizing many of the key beats. The separation of Celie and Nettie for instance, when Albert drags her kicking and screaming from his farm, with Nettie screaming with engrossed exagerration “Why!!!? Why!!!?”

Most of the supporting characters, in particular the men, are characterized without an ounce of depth or colour. Both Celie’s father and husband Albert are indignified beyond belief as immature tail chasing children who lose their marbles and act like cavemen in pursuit of their women. Even Harpo and Sophia are characterized as a cartoonish antidote to Celie’s quiet introspection.

Spielberg does make up for Sophia by giving her the most extreme and emotionally devastating character arc in the picture. Her transition from a headstrong independent woman, to a broken down housemaid and shadow of her former self is in our face, but dramatized by the best scenes in the film and the best performance as well – Oprah Winfrey. Watching poor Sophia leave her Christmas family reunion to drive her upper class matron back to her home wrings out so much emotional pain.

Miraculously Spielberg, despite drowning us with tears, manages to execute a stunning emotional finale. A series of scenes and actions which lead to the reunification of Nettie and Celie: Celie’s discovery of Nettie’s letters, her confrontation with Albert at the dinner table, Albert’s redemption by engineering Nettie’s return to the country and finally, that John Ford moment I mentioned above when she first see’s Nettie’s car drive up the country road.

Does Spielberg’s blatantly sentimental treatment of such sensitive subject matter betray the gravitas of Walker’s material? I'm still not sure, but either way I will forever be reviled by and inexplicably drawn to this movie.

DVD Review: WAKING SLEEPING BEAUTY

WAKING SLEEPING BEAUTY

(Dir. Don Hahn, 2009)

Veteran Disney producer Don Hahn here provides an engrossing inside look at the world of Walt Disney Feature Animation from the years 1980-1994. Years in which as an opening title tells us: "A perfect storm of people and circumstances changed the face of animation forever."

Hahn, who narrates, takes us through the studio's struggle in the '80s after animator Don Bluth left taking with him half of their staff. It was incredibly difficult to compete with Bluth and Steven Spielberg's more-Disney-than-Disney productions such as "An American Tail", so it looked like time to step up their game.

This resulted in the "Disney Renaissance" which included such smash hit features as "The Little Mermaid", "Beauty And The Beast", "Aladdin", and "The Lion King".

We hear the voice of Roy Disney (older brother of Walt) explain how in 1984 Paramount Pictures chairman Michael Eisner became chief executive officer of Disney. Also recruited from another studio (Warner Brothers) was Frank Wells who was made Disney's President and Chief Operating Officer. In addition Eisner brings in former Paramount colleague Jeffrey Katzenberg to run the film devision of Disney.

Hahn considered this an "invasion from Hollywood" and bemoans the changes that were being made: "I remember interior decorators tearing down walls that hadn't been touched since 1939."

These shake-ups dishearten the animators who are relocated to their chagrin to smaller shabbier production facilities.

Newly appointed President of the Feature Animation Peter Schneider (and co-producer of this doc) causes some controversy when he changes the title "The Basil Of Baker Street" to "The Great Mouse Detective".

The name change didn't help the film beat the box office of "An American Tale", but a collaboration with Spielberg on "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" a few years later would do a lot to spurn on the "Disney Renaissance".

From there we learn about the background on Disney's home video moratoriums, the making of various projects, we see grainy video of musical recording sessions, and we get the scoop on the rise of computer graphics via a small firm that experimented with character animation that made Listerine commercials on the side. The firm's name was Pixar.

Then there are the tragic deaths of song writer Howard Ashman who died from AIDs before he could see a final cut of his work in the smash hit "Beauty And The Beast" in 1991, and Disney President Frank Wells who died in a helicopter crash in 1994.

Wells was the glue that kept it all together, the go-between from ego to ego, so his passing made worse the friction surrounding Roy Disney, Eisner, and Katzenberg. Katzenberg wanted Wells' job and he learned he wasn't going to get it - he resigned.

WAKING SLEEPING BEAUTY may be a bit self congratulating at times, but it's a well told story that breezes by aided by classic film clips, sketchy yet eye-opening works-in-progress, excerpts from TV interviews, and much home movie quality film shot by Hahn over the years.

It's a must for Disney fans as well as anybody with an interest in the juicy details of what goes on behind the scenes of a major studio from turbulent to triumphant times.

Special Features: A bevy of featurettes entitled "Why Wake Sleeping Beauty?", "The Sailor, the Mountain Climber, the Artist and the Poet – Celebrating Roy Disney, Frank Wells, Joe Ranft, and Howard Ashman", "Studio tours" including Randy’s tours, "Roger Rabbit" studio, "Oliver studio", "A Reunion – Rob Minkoff and Kirk Wise", "Walt - What Would Walt Do", and "Compare Walt’s Era And This Era". There's also 3 webisode shorts, deleted scenes, and an extensive photo gallery.

INSIDE JOB: The Film Babble Blog Review

INSIDE JOB
(Dir. Charles Ferguson, 2010)

"I don't know what credit default swaps are. I'm old fashioned that way." - George Soros

That makes 2 of us. There are many things like that in this documentary that I was completely in the dark about going in, yet in a sober (and sobering) manner INSIDE JOB explains the financial meltdown of 2008 in a fairly graspable way.

Matt Damon calmly narrates the film, taking us through segments entitled "How We Got Here", "The Bubble", "The Crisis", "Accountability", and "Where We Are Now".

It's a lot of complicated information to take in, but through interviews with key players such as the before mentioned financier George Soros, U.S. House Representative Barney Frank, former NY State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, Economics professor Nouriel Roubini, economist Paul Volcker, and many others, the film does an impressive, if at times impenetrable, job of breaking it down.

Ferguson, whose previous film the Iraq war doc NO END IN SIGHT was just as exhaustive, has a real knack for assembling a powerful narrative out of a tangled web of sometimes extremely confusing criteria.

We learn about corporate fat cats pocketing millions sometimes billions of dollars from corrupt loans. We see power point presentation style graphics that help define CDOs (collateralized debt obligations), subprime lending, and all kind of mortage mayhem. We even get an interview with a former Wall Street "Madam" (Kristin Davis) who supplied investment bankers with prostitutes.

It's an excellent eye-opening documentary that thankfully uses a minimum of Michael Moore-ish methods like pop song punctuation. Peter Gabriel's "Big Time" plays during the opening credit swoop through the Manhattan skyline, and Ace Frehley's "New York Groove" provides a backing beat to footage of excessive lifestyles, but such touches don't intrude at all on the thesis at hand.

INSIDE JOB is more informative than it is entertaining and its conclusion that criticizes President Obama for doing little to change the situation is depressing, but it's an incredibly well crafted and sharply focused work that got my mind reeling.

That is, even if I still can't tell you exactly what a credit default swap is.

Katrina Kaif To Do Madhuri’s Dhak Dhak Item

Katrina Kaif is all set to do a village belle number and a Madhuri Dixit imitation of the very popular item song from Beta- ‘Dhak Dhak Karne Lagaa…oh mera jiyaara jalne lagaa…’. Katrina Kaif is practicing for this song to be featured in Farah Khan’s next film with Akshay Kumar, ‘Tees Maar Khan’ and trying to get the jhatka and thumkas right a la Madhuri Dixit. Farah Khan has apparently given her the DVD of the song and asked Katrina to copy the moves. Geeta Kapoor (Of Dance India Dance fame) is going to be choreographing the song along with Farah Khan and the dress for the occasion is being designed by Aki Narula. To be shot at Malshej Ghat, this one seems to be a treat worth waiting for. Watch out for this space for more.

A Review Of The Dreadful TAMARA DREWE

TAMARA DREWE (Dir. Stephen Frears, 2010)

I was surprised to see the credit “Based on the graphic novel” on the screen at the beginning of this British comedy clunker.

It seems every other movie this year was based on a graphic novel!

Nothing wrong with that I suppose, just unexpected with this type of Thomas Hardy-ish material which concerns a writer’s retreat setting in a quaint English village captured in the ever lasting golden hour.

In a tale told in seasons, aspiring authors congregate at the home of a bestselling writer (Roger Allam) and his hosting wife (Tamsin Greig) who has long learned to look the other way to deal with her husband’s affairs.

Allam is always pompously pontificating about his supposed literary talent mostly to a struggling neurotic writer played by a buffoonish Bill Camp.

Returning to the town for the first time since her nose-job, Gemma Arterton, as the title character, appears in skimpy cut-offs and red tank top and every man in sight swoons.

This includes Luke Evans as the gardener/handyman who had a fling with Artenton when they were teens we’re told in a racy flashback.

Artenton is a journalist covering a punk pop band named Swipe who break up after a row on stage in which the drummer (Dominic Cooper) is outraged over the coupling of 2 his band-mates particularly since one had been his girlfriend.

To Evan’s chagrin Cooper and Artenton quickly couple up themselves, all the while a couple of hiding chatty schoolgirls (Jessica Barden and Charlotte Christie) watch it all smitten themselves with Cooper.

Allam gets into the game by bedding Arterton, Camp secretly pines for Grieg who he uses as a muse, and the schoolgirls cause trouble with a naughty email so there’s endless foolish shenanigans at every turn.

The film builds to a tragic last third, hints of which are dropped here and there throughout, but once it’s upon us its effect is mind-numbingly banal.

For all its energy and colorful imagery, “Tamara Drewe” never gels. It’s a completely charmless and painfully unfunny farce. Every attempt at wit falls flat and I could never deduce what the point of it all was.

No insights into restless writer’s mindsets or hearts – it’s all just misplaced vanity.

It also doesn’t help that the characters are all unlikable especially Allam’s who is just a transparent caricature of a womanizing cad.

The film doesn’t seem to be on anybody’s side so there’s nobody to care about. Despite the richness of the countryside and Frear’s ace sense of staging, its ultra-smarmy tone sabotages the entire production.

I can only hope that the graphic novel (and still going comic strip in the Guardian) by Posy Simmonds is more worthwhile than this dreadful tripe.
